The situation

What you're actually dealing with

Cabinet installation is a levelling and scribing job. Cabinets arrive square, houses are not, and the entire quality of the finished kitchen comes down to how carefully the boxes are shimmed, levelled and fastened before a single door is hung.

This matters more in older housing stock than anywhere else. Walls in a home built in the 1940s are rarely plumb and floors are rarely flat, which means a run of cabinets set without proper shimming will show it immediately: doors that will not align, gaps at the ceiling, and a countertop that cannot sit flat.

Best Pro installs cabinetry you have purchased, or supplies and installs it. Either way the boxes get set level and fastened into framing, not into drywall.

Scope

What a typical job includes

This is the standard scope. Yours is written out and agreed before anything starts.

  • Removal and disposal of existing cabinetry where applicable
  • Wall and floor assessment for level, plumb and square before layout
  • Layout and level line established across the full run
  • Upper and base cabinet installation, shimmed and fastened into framing
  • Scribing to walls, ceilings and floors for tight finished joints
  • Filler, trim, toe kick, crown and light rail installation
  • Door and drawer alignment across the whole run
  • Hardware installation
  • Coordination with countertop templating and install

Cost

What drives the price

Best Pro does not publish price ranges, because a number posted on a website has to ignore everything that actually makes your job cost what it costs. Here is what a quote is built from instead.

  • The number of cabinet boxes and the total linear footage of the run
  • Whether existing cabinets have to be removed and disposed of
  • How far out of level and plumb the walls and floors are, which drives scribing labor
  • Crown, light rail, fillers and other trim detail
  • Whether plumbing or electrical has to be relocated for a layout change
  • Countertop coordination and any required cabinet modification for sinks or appliances

The free estimate covers all of it: an on-site walkthrough, a written scope, and a firm number you can compare against anyone else's.

Process

How a cabinetry job runs

  1. Step 1

    Measure and layout review

We check the field measurements against the cabinet order before demolition, because a layout problem found on paper costs nothing and one found on install day costs a week.

  2. Step 2

    Demolition

Existing cabinets out, walls patched, and any plumbing or electrical that needs to move identified and coordinated.

  3. Step 3

    Layout lines

Level lines struck around the room from the high point of the floor, and studs located and marked. This step is what everything else hangs on.

  4. Step 4

    Install

Uppers first, then bases, each one shimmed and scribed, fastened into framing and joined to its neighbor.

  5. Step 5

    Countertop coordination

Once the bases are set and level, the countertop fabricator can template. We coordinate that timing so you are not waiting on it.

  6. Step 6

    Trim, doors and hardware

Fillers, toe kick, crown and light rail, then every door and drawer front aligned across the run and hardware set.

New cabinet installation
Stock, semi-custom or custom boxes. We install what you have bought or help you specify it.
